Day 2 - Chatham Strait and Pavlof Harbor

Day 2, Monday June 1, was spent cruising Chatham Strait on the way to Pavlof Harbor for a hike and kayaking. Near Tenakee Inlet a grazing brown bear and two whales were spotted before the ship anchored in Pavlof Harbor and the Zodiacs took everyone to shore for a hike to the cascades coming out of Pavlof Lake followed by some paddling around the harbor.

Later that day on the way towards Elfin Cove and the Inian Islands, a large pod of humpback whales was observed bubblenet feeding, a cooperative effort that herds schools of herring into a net of bubbles. The whales then lunge upwards with open mouths to feed on the herring. This behavior was repeated several times before the whales drifted off.

At sunset more whales appeared against a background of the Fairweather Range as the moon rose over the NG Sea Lion in the late-night dusk.
