Day 2 - Chatham Strait and Pavlof Harbor |
Day 2, Monday June 1, was spent cruising Chatham Strait on the way to Pavlof Harbor for a hike and kayaking. Near Tenakee Inlet a grazing brown bear and two whales were spotted before the ship anchored in Pavlof Harbor and the Zodiacs took everyone to shore for a hike to the cascades coming out of Pavlof Lake followed by some paddling around the harbor. |
Later that day on the way towards Elfin Cove and the Inian Islands, a large pod of humpback whales was observed bubblenet feeding, a cooperative effort that herds schools of herring into a net of bubbles. The whales then lunge upwards with open mouths to feed on the herring. This behavior was repeated several times before the whales drifted off. |
At sunset more whales appeared against a background of the Fairweather Range as the moon rose over the NG Sea Lion in the late-night dusk. |
