Day 7 - Endicott Arm Cruise, Dawes Glacier and Ford's Terror |
Saturday June 6, Day 7 of the expedition, was a day of cruising to a position deep in the Endicott Arm fiord, where the Zodiacs were boarded for a close-up look at Dawes Glacier and the icebergs that had calved from the glacier. Endicott Arm is a long, narrow fiord that leads to Dawes Glacier, an active tide water glacier. During summer, large numbers of icebergs and smaller bits calved from the glacier often form a barrier to small boats attempting to enter the fiord. |
Another short cruise led into the narrower passageway leading to Ford's Terror. Ford's Terror Wilderness Area is a branch off the main channel of Endicott Arm, with sheer rock walls towering above the narrow waterway which connects it with Endicott Arm, In 1889 this site was named for Harry Ford, a draftsman on the ship Patterson. He entered the fiord at slack tide when the sea was calm, but on his return the conditions had changed. Standing waves, churning whirlpools, and bouncing icebergs provided a terrifying exit for Ford in his tiny rowboat. The Zodiacs again took to the water for close-up views of the waterfalls, flora and the "terrifying" channel of the wilderness area. |
